Explosive Ordnance Risk Educator

The Swiss Foundation for Mine Action (FSD) in Ukraine is seeking a number of Explosive Ordnance Risk Educatorss to support its activities in eastern Ukraine.

Purpose of the Position

Under the overall management of the Country Director and the direct supervision of the Operations Coordinator, the Explosive Ordnance Risk Educator will be part of a small mobile team responsible for the delivery of explosive ordnance risk education sessions (normally via direct presentations) to beneficiaries.  Beneficiaries will include children, Internally Displaced People (IDP) and members of ‘at risk’ communities.

Scope 

Explosive Ordnance Risk Educators will be allocated to one of three, three person teams and will be tasked with the provision of risk education sessions to selected communities in the project area.  Risk Education sessions may be in the form of presentations, games, songs, plays or stories depending on the age and composition of the audience.  The teams will also be required to distribute EORE posters and leaflets in affected communities.   The teams will be mixed gender and one team member will be selected as the team driver.

The position will involve daily travel from the base location and there may be a requirement for the occasional multi-day business trips.  

The position does not involve the requirement to touch or otherwise interact with live mines or UXO.

Training

Training will be provided prior to the start of the project EORE activities.

 Duties Include:

  • Conduct of Risk Education sessions for the selected communities using approved EORE materials and messages;
  • Distribute EORE materials, including leaflets, brochure posters, flyers and stickers;
  • Record and document EORE activities (photographs, reports and video);
  • Assist and support the Team Leader and Operations Coordinator in developing team and project plans based on knowledge of local communities’ needs and requirements;
  • Assist in the conduct of assessments, including on-site interviews with beneficiaries, and other technical missions on behalf of FSD.
  • Assist in evaluation of the benefits that FSD's activities have on ‘at risk’ people and communities and other relevant stakeholders.

Team Driver: in addition to the above, Team Drivers will be responsible for the operation, care and daily maintenance of the team vehicle.

The Explosive Ordnance Risk Educator must also demonstrate the following personal attributes:

  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity; 
  • Flexible;
  • Demonstrate a sound work ethic, and
  • Willingness to learn.

 Applicant qualifications:

  • Well-developed language skills in Ukrainian and Russian;
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, communications or social work may be an advantage, but is not specifically required;
  • Minimum of two years practical experience in a business, government or non-governmental organization environment;
  • Experience working in a small team environment is an advantage;
  • Female applicants are encouraged, and
  • Team Driver applicants must have a clean, valid driving license.

 Terms:

  • Starting date: ASAP
  • Duration: contract until June 30, 2021 with possible extension.
