    The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.

    The ICRC is mandated to work in countries affected by armed conflict or other situations of violence. The ICRC is present in over 80 countries and has some 13,000 field staff.

    In 2014, the ICRC expanded its presence to Ukraine. There are more than 300 ICRC staff working in Kyiv, Sloviansk, Severodonetsk, Mariupol, Donetsk, Luhansk and Odesa.

    COMMUNICATION OFFICER

    Based in Kyiv

     

    AIM OF THE POSITION

     

    The ideal candidate will be skilled at turning complex issues into accessible public messages, have a good knowledge of what makes a story engaging and newsworthy, and understand the sensitivities of working with vulnerable people. She/He will also possess creativity, initiative, autonomy, strong storytelling skills, ability to think 'out of the box' and to develop new and interesting angles.

     

    CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Contribute to the implementation of public communication strategies and plans of action in support of the activities and positions of the ICRC;
    • Draft compelling communications and campaign material promoting the ICRC's humanitarian work in Ukraine and highlighting specific humanitarian issues linked to the conflict for a range of channels across traditional and digital media, and develop new multimedia content that effectively communicates our work and messages;
    • Plan and organize public events, working with partners to manage the event from concept to execution;
    • Highlight regularly the ICRC action and position and engage with all stakeholders through traditional and social media in cooperation with the spokesperson;
    • Develop and manage public campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the services provided by the ICRC and on specific humanitarian issues, with external providers where necessary;
    • Contribute to the identification of media opportunities for the delegation;
    • Develop and strengthen a network of media representatives, maintain a database of media contacts.

    The tasks and responsibilities defined above are not exhaustive and can evolve depending on organizational needs.

     

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS

     

    Education and professional qualifications

    • Bachelor or Masters (preferable) degree or equivalent in journalism, public relations or related field of expertise;
    • 5 years of professional experience in related field;
    • A background in public relations, campaigns, or marketing is especially advantageous;
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, Ukrainian and Russian;
    • An understanding of the media landscape in Ukraine and ability to tailor messaging and material appropriately;
    • Good project management skills;
    • Solid experience and interest in working with modern communication tools and social media platforms;
    • Skills of turning complex issues into accessible public messages;
    • Good knowledge of what makes a story engaging and newsworthy;
    • Strong storytelling skills;
    • Knowledge of the ICRC and the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is an asset.
