The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral, and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC is mandated to work in countries affected by armed conflict or other situations of violence. The ICRC is present in over 100 countries and has some 20,000 staff. In 2014, the ICRC expanded its presence in Ukraine. We have over 900 staff working across the county in various professional fields. 

We like to invite you to join our ICRC Weapon Contamination Roster and Pool for future vacancies in one of our ICRC offices in Dnipro, Kharkiv, Kyiv, or Odesa.  

The ICRC has several Rosters and Pools for different professions. To join an ICRC Roster and Pool, we will assess your expertise and professional experience against the below-mentioned criteria and invite you for an online technical test. Once you have passed the test, you will join the specific ICRC Roster and Pool. As soon as we have a suitable vacancy, we will actively reach out to you, discuss the position, your interest, and availability. 

About the job 

The ICRC Weapon Contamination (WeC) unit is looking for Weapon Contamination Officers. The WeC Field Officer implements directly or supports the implementation and monitoring of ICRC WeC activities in Ukraine. As a member of a WeC team, a WeC Field Officer contributes directly to ensuring staff safety and the continuation of critical operations, helping vulnerable people, and supporting the Ukrainian Red Cross Society (UCRS) in situations where weapon contamination poses a hazard through delivery of Risk Awareness & Safer Behavior (RASB) activities to internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees and people on transit. 

Your Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing and following up on WeC activities
  • Contribute to assessing and analyzing the security, socio-economic, cultural, and political environment as relevant to the ICRC, and share information on these subjects with the wider organization
  • Collect and compile WeC-related information
  • Contribute to building the capacity of the national authorities and the UCRS
  • Contribute to written reporting on WeC activities
  • Develop and maintain contacts with the authorities at local level
  • Translate/interpret as required 
  • Report events and changes within the region that could have an impact on the ICRC's activities, thereby providing sound elements that help the delegation to set objectives and priorities
  • Stand in for the WeC Field Manager and represents the WeC programme in internal and external meetings

About you

To be successful in this Roster and Pool recruitment, you should possess the following qualifications and experiences and have the following characteristics:   

  • Ukrainian citizenship or permanent residence permit in Ukraine
  • High school or professional diploma
  • Between one and five years of experience in Weapon Contamination/mine action or a similar field
  • Academically or professionally proficient in a technical WeC-related subject or pedagogics 
  • Knowledge of the ICRC/humanitarian work an asset
  • Good knowledge of the geographic area assigned
  • Excellent teaching and presentation skills
  • Good command (written and spoken) of English, Ukrainian, and Russian
  • Computer literate, with excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in Dialogue with authorities/arms carriers, Capacity building, Result-based management cycle, Context and dynamic analysis, Community and outreach activities, Security Awareness & Response
  • Skilled in the following competencies: Adapting & Learning, Communication (ability to express and exchange views and ideas), Analysis & Synthesis
  • Self-motivated with a strong commitment to teamwork and humanitarian principles
  • Flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to learn
  • Ability to work independently, as well as effectively under supervision
  • Confidence in managing projects and staff
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to work within a diverse team and establish and maintain good working relations in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-disciplinary environment
