The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.

 

 

The ICRC is mandated to work in countries affected by armed conflict or other situations of violence. The ICRC is present in over 80 countries and has some 13,000 field staff.

 

In 2014, the ICRC expanded its presence to Ukraine. There are more than 500 ICRC staff working in Kyiv, Sloviansk, Severodonetsk, Mariupol, Donetsk, Lugansk and Odesa.

Weapon Contamination Field Officer

Lugansk based

 

AIM OF THE POSITION

 

The role of Weapon Contamination Field Officer is to determine the needs of the affected civilian population and effectively respond to the weapon contamination threat in Lugansk Sub-Delegation area of responsibility. Wherever possible and feasible, he/she addresses the needs through the Movement approach.

 

S/He assists in and conducts assessments on the extent and the type of the weapon contamination threat and develops/implements relevant activities to prevent incidents among civilian population and acts as a technical reference for any related Weapon Contamination issue, providing guidance on weapon contamination, including the development, planning and implementation and monitoring of objectives.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Implements and follows up WeC activities.
  • Executes field tasks to assist in the implementation and monitoring of departments' projects under close supervision
  • Contributes to assessing and analysing the security, socio-economic, cultural and political environment as relevant to the ICRC, and shares information on these subjects with colleagues.
  • Contributes to written reporting on WeC activities including contribution to the WoR, BfR, PfR.
  • Develops and maintains contacts with the authorities at local level.
  • Translates/interprets as required by the department.
  • Contributes to the annual planning process (Planning for Results), including budgeting and monitoring of implementation.
  • Contributes to meeting WeC objectives within the geographic remit of the sub-delegation.
  • Stands in for the WeC Delegate and represents the WeC programme in internal and external meetings.

 

The tasks and responsibilities defined above are not exhaustive and can evolve depending on organizational needs.

 

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

 

Education and professional qualifications

  • Relevant degree from a university or technical college.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • At least 3 years overall professional experience
  • 2 years' work experience in WeC/mine action or a similar field.
  • Academically or professionally proficient in a technical WeC-related subject or pedagogics.
  • Previous experience with the ICRC or other humanitarian agency desired.
  • Knowledge of the ICRC/humanitarian work an asset.
  • Good knowledge of the geographic area assigned.
  • Excellent teaching and presentation skills.

 

Personal Competencies 

  • Genuine interest to work in humanitarian aid field;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Strong sense of responsibility;
  • Good team player.
