About Us

The HALO Trust is the world's oldest and largest humanitarian mine action organisation with 8,500 staff in 25 countries and territories. We lead the effort to protect lives and restore livelihoods for those affected by conflict. We remove landmines and make safe other weapons such as cluster bombs, stockpiles of small arms and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Since the beginning of operations in Ukraine in early 2016, HALO has grown into the largest international mine action operator in the country.

HALO currently employs approximately 440 national staff across Kyiv oblast, conducting survey and marking of hazardous areas, risk education, and clearance operations. HALO Ukraine is going through a period of large expansion and scaling up its operations across Ukraine, both in terms of geographical locations and staff numbers.

We are currently actively looking for a Media Officer to join our team

This position deals with work in the city of Brovary, Kyiv region

The Role: In this Media Officer role, you will liaise with the HALO Ukraine leadership team and the organisation’s central press office in the UK. 

Responsibilities:

  • Building relationships with Ukrainian radio, press and TV reporters to brief them on HALO activities, policies and reports to build brand awareness of HALO as a national employer
  • Building relationships with international press teams based in Kyiv, particularly US, German, UK, Canadian and Dutch broadcasters. Identity and engage with bureau chiefs, producers, fixers, camera operators and reporters on rotation
  • Writing press releases, statements, speeches and other external messaging for senior HALO staff 
  • Acting as a spokesperson for the HALO Trust in Ukraine when necessary
  • Conducting regular recces with HALO survey teams to identify visually compelling locations with strong news narratives for press trips and film shoots
  • Identifying risks to the global reputation of the HALO Trust and potential misinformation campaigns. Participating in crisis communications with the global press team when required
  • Monitoring and sharing all earned press coverage and maintaining an archive
  • Supporting with any other communications related tasks on an ad hoc basis.

The Candidate: To be considered for the Media Officer role you will need to demonstrate: 

Essential:

  • At least three years working on for a state broadcaster, newspaper or radio station or five years as a press officer for a reputable NGO or government department 
  • Fluent English and Ukrainian
  • Ability to write powerful, concise and factually rigorous copy under time constraints
  • Ability to digest heavily technical material and translate into straightforward layperson lexicon
  • Ability to manage multiple press teams on outdoor locations, ensuring total compliance with safety protocols. Maintaining authority on shoots to ensure no HALO staff or beneficiaries are filmed or interviewed without prior consent.
