    The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.

    The ICRC is mandated to work in countries affected by armed conflict or other situations of violence. The ICRC is present in over 80 countries and has some 13,000 field staff.

    In 2014, the ICRC expanded its presence to Ukraine. There are more than 300 ICRC staff working in Kyiv, Sloviansk, Severodonetsk, Mariupol, Donetsk, Luhansk and Odesa.

    FORENSIC SPECIALIST

    Based in Kyiv

    AIM OF THE POSITION

    • Contributes to the ICRC's implementation of Forensic / Missing activities and programs in Ukraine and its main stakeholders;
    • Enhances ICRC activities in promoting the implementation of forensic international standards, including those applicable to the Management and Identification of the dead and the Missing and their families

     

    CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

    Under the supervision of the Regional Forensic Coordinator, s/he is responsible for:

    • Contributes to the definition of the strategy, objectives, priorities and plan of action of forensic activities aiming at improving the existing system for management and identification of the dead and search of missing persons in Ukraine,
    • Implements and follows-up activities aiming at supporting the existing system for identification of bodies and search of missing persons, including providing material assistance and support to infrastructures to improve working conditions and promote dignified treatment of the dead;
    • Organizes and participates to trainings, workshops, and meetings as part of building local forensic capacity in accordance with international standards;
    • Conducts and / or participates in field trips as part of the implementation of forensic activities;
    • Conducts/supports follow up of the existing ICRC case load of missing persons including support to authorities and families of the missing for the resolution of cases;
    • Disseminates the organisations' communications on forensic science and forensic humanitarian action
    • Develops and maintains contacts with interlocutors: authorities, forensic practitioners at national and regional level;
    • Translates documents (institutional and non-institutional);
    • Reports in writing on the activities.

    The tasks and responsibilities defined above are not exhaustive and can evolve depending on organizational needs.

     

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS

    Education and professional qualifications

    • Higher Education degree in an area relevant for the job (i.e. Health and Biological sciences, Criminalistics);
    • 4 years' work experience in the forensic field or similar field of activity, familiarity with Identification methods, DVI and procedures,
    • Good knowledge of spoken and written English/Ukrainian/Russian;
    • Good computer literacy;
    • Good rigour, method and analytical skills;
    • Management skills;
    • Good knowledge of the political, social and cultural aspects of the assigned environment.

    Personal Competencies

    • Genuine interest to work in humanitarian aid field;
    • Very good analytical skills;
    • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and take initiative;
    • Ability to work under minor supervision;
    • Strong sense of responsibility;
    • Reliability and proactivity is a must
    • Good team player.
