Junior Technical Professional: Structural change in Ukrainian Coal Regions (full time, Kyiv)

In the upcoming decade, unprofitable state-owned coal mines will be seizing its operations. This poses major social and economic challenges for the coal regions. The structural change needed to overcome them, based on the concepts of Just Transition and Green Recovery, can provide new impetus for the development and growth in the affected regions, and beyond. Decarbonization of the economy also makes a significant contribution to Ukraine's ability to raise its level of ambition in the context of global climate protection.

The aim of the project “Support for Structural Change in Ukrainian Coal Regions” is to ensure that Ukraine carries out the structural change associated with the coal phase-out in a socially and economically compatible and ecologically sustainable manner, with the involvement of civil society, using appropriate funding instruments in accordance with the concepts of Just Transition and Green Recovery.

Tasks

  • Support the team in the implementation of all technical support activities relating to political dialogue and strategic recommendations in the field of structural change in coal regions/ just transition.
  • Support in compiling, verifying, collating of data and information related to projects’ operations, screen background information and coordinate inputs on projects’ operations, monitor changes in political and economic surrounding and draft briefings.
  • Prepare local contracts and grants in the field of professional and international exchange together with the finance and procurement unit, liaise with consultants and service providers.
  • Organize operational planning and other coordination sessions of the team, prepare and moderate team meetings.
  • Support in organization, implementation, documentation, communication and follow-up of workshops, trainings, stakeholder consultations and other events (offline, online, hybrid), international exchange formats and visits of international delegations.
  • Support the project team in monitoring project activities, knowledge management and document management for DMS in line with GIZ’s filing rules, keep track of forthcoming meetings and events and autonomously monitor and address open tasks and deadlines for these events.
  • Provide cross-cutting support to the project team, procurement and finance officers in performing their tasks related to the project operations.

Required qualifications, competences and experience

  • BA in Business Administration, Management, Communications, Linguistics.
  • At least 2 years of experience, including through internships, in the sphere of sustainable development, energy and climate policy, event management or international cooperation.
  • Experience or at least interest for the topics in the fields of energy transition, coal and extracting industries, coal regions in Ukraine and other European countries.
  • Preferably experience with working in international organizations, primarily in the international development cooperation sector.
  • Fluency in Ukrainian/ Russian and English; German knowledge should be aspired if not yet existent.
  • Excellent and proactive communicator with a service-oriented attitude.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office package and digital conference tools.
  • Curiosity and creativity in inventing new exchange formats.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in an international context.
  • Ability to accomplish projects on own responsibility within a team.
  • Reliability, confidentiality, flexibility and stress resistance.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, solve problems, manage and meet deadlines and maintain a high quality of work.
  • Ability to work with international partners and manage cross/cultural communications.

Employment conditions 

Full-time position with 40-hours working week. The contract duration is 1 year. Prolongation possible. Starting as soon as possible. This position requires Ukraine-wide travels, in case necessary, under a business as usual scenario (i.e. when travel restrictions are lifted).
